'Studying the

Bible in context'

EXAMPLE D: A Regional Outline of the Gospel

(Regions on the Run, pp. 32-33)

Changes in the geopolitical setting of the land in centuries preceding the Gospels are summarized on the double page 'The Land Between Into the
days of Jesus' (pp. 30-31 in the list of contents to the right). A Regional Outline of the Gospels (pp. 32-37) offers insights into Jesus' teaching in a land which reflected conflicting political and religious perspectives.

Six sections open with an introduction followed by an outline of events (above center of each page) with references on the left and color-coded regional notes on the right (green indicates Galilee; browns, Judea or Perea). Adjacent maps show the borders of Jewish territory (yellow) and trace Jesus' ministry throughout the land.

This outline offers many approaches to studying the Gospels. Red boxes and underlining alert the reader to inherent cultural or religious conflict. Jewish feasts (shaded circles) help in understanding chronological issues. There are also topical links from pages 30-31 to this outline. In short, this regional outline is filled with potential insights into the Gospels.
