EXAMPLE C: Damascus, Bashan and Hazor Gateways

(Regions on the Run, pp. 14-15)

This double page offers a more detailed presentation of part of the Northern Arena: Damascus, Bashan and Hazor Gateways. (See this as one of the Northern Arena's two sub-discussions in the list of contents to the right.)

The map of these gateways flows out of the larger Middle East map at the bottom of the page. This allows the reader to see how the region fits into the larger whole. The larger map not only shows sites and routes but also arrows which represent the natural flow of trade and invasions. A brief explanation of these arrows (bottom left) is augmented by a discussion of the large map (top right). The rest of the right hand page summarizes events over the millennia that illustrate these arrows (together with their references).

To aid the reader in following the discussion of events the 4000 Year Overview chart on backcover of Regions on the Run folds out and appears to the right of the text. Thus map, text and chart are all visible.
